Ever since I was young, I've loved teaching. Back in middle school, I used to help my friends with their math homework after school. Once I got to high school I pursued my interest in teaching by tutoring my friends and classmates. Here are a few of the tutoring programs I ran.

During summer of 2018, I was trying to find volunteer opportunities that fit my passion. A lot of opportunities that I looked into were not possible due to commuting needs or had a required age (18+) that I did not qualify for. A family friend introduced me to a high school raising sophomore who needed Math and Science tutoring, so I spent the summer providing one on one tutoring at our local library.

As a result of this experience, I felt I could create volunteer opportunities for others that enjoyed tutoring. So I created a web-site to connect tutors with students – Tutor Connection MA is a free tutoring service for middle-school and high-school students in Massachusetts. It provides an easy way for you to find local high school students who volunteer their time to tutor in their subjects of expertise. Though the website wasn't too successful, it was still a good experience.

In my sophomore year, I tutored my peers in Algebra I, II and Geometry, and one of the senior students in Pre-Calculus.

It was a bit overwhelming for me when I started my freshman year in 2016 at Saint John’s High School. In addition to the ramp up to academics, not to mention all the homework, there were a lot of clubs and sports to get involved in. I was not sure if I was making the most of all the opportunities available.

When I looked back, I wish I had some advice on what it would be like, and how I could manage my time better, at the start of the year. Reflecting on this after my freshman year, I wanted to help some of the incoming freshman from my middle school, so I created and ran a two day 8th Grade Transition Program, for incoming Freshman during the summer break, that covered the following:

  • Some ways to make the transition easier
  • What to expect in the core subjects
  • Math
  • Taking the PSAT and SAT Subject Tests

In middle school, I assisted 5th through 8th grade students at Saint Bernadette’s School, in the after school program, with their Math homework.
